Hospitable Hyderabad is truly hot-V V S Laxman

Renowned cricketer V V S Laxman, in an exclusive talk with Ashok Kumar, argues that Bangalore still retains its sheen but nobody can write off Hyderabad and it has a great IT future ahead.
Bangalore still retains its sheen but being from Hyderabad I would say that I have seen the city growing in terms of IT sector in the past few years like never before.

I feel the policies of the Government sets the trend of development in the country or state. Yes the present government of Andhra Pradesh government is coming true on the promise of working for the poor but the fact is that no government can survive by neglecting any one sector at the cost of another.

The way the government is working it shows that it is trying its best to maintain the fine balance between the development of the villages and the urban areas including the IT sector in Hyderabad. Moreover most of the works in the field of Information Technology has already been initiated by the former governments long back.

So, it is not like that everything has to be started from scratch. The present government and the future ones have just to carry on the good work forward in the right perspectives with same zeal and enthusiasm. Most of the infrastructural and path laying works have already been done by the state so far.
Hyderabad is a very beautiful city with proper infrastructure and is not congested at all. Unlike Bangalore, Hyderabad has excellent roads and commuting system. Not only that the city is also improving on the existing infrastructure by working on it in many ways like widening roads, providing ample electricity and many other facilities.

Look, nowadays, commuting in Hyderabad has become very comfortable with the state of transport system and many other viable projects already in the offing. This I feel is one such thing, which makes the city more attractive to those who decide to make Hyderabad their home. Certainly, very exciting projects are too catching up and will very soon see the light of the day making things even easier and brighter for the Hyderabadis

Of these, let me make the special mention of the metro project which is catching up rapidly and an international aerodrome boasting of world class facilities would be ready by June 2008. These are some of the things which will add that extra grades...

Hyderabad Outer Ring Road(ORR) Phase1 Photos

First phase of Hyderabad Outer Ring Road thrown open

Hyderabad, Nov 14 (IANS) The first phase of the new Outer Ring Road (ORR), which is aimed at decongesting the city, was thrown open to traffic Friday. The 23.48 km long first phase connects Gacchibowli to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad. This will ensure better connectivity to the airport from Hitech City and Gacchibowli, the information technology hubs.

Named after former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, the eight-lane 158 km long ORR is being built at an estimated cost of Rs.67.87 billion and is expected to be completed by 2011.

The first phase built at a cost of nearly Rs.7 billion, however, was thrown open only with four lanes and the remaining lanes are likely to be completed by August next year.

Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy reviewed the progress of the ORR works on the occasion.

Since this stretch is only for traffic going towards the airport, the authorities have banned the entry of trucks, three-wheelers and two-wheelers on it. The speed limit has been fixed at 60 km per hour.

The ORR project is being built in three phases and companies from Russia, Japan and Thailand are undertaking the work.

The officials said tenders were already finalised for the second phase, that would stretch 60 km and is estimated to cost Rs.22 billion and be under public private partnership model and build, operate and transfer basis.

The third phase covering 71 km is being taken up with assistance of Japan International Cooperation Agency.

One km area on both sides of ORR will come under the ORR Growth corridor with special regulations for the development of commercial, residential and institutional activity there.

The 500 feet wide ORR is supported by service roads on both sides.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had in 2004 laid the foundation stone for the project, which has given an impetus to the development activity around the city.

Several world-class townships, IT parks, and institutes of excellence are likely to come up along the ORR.

There was delay in launching the work on the project due to hurdles in land acquisition and the controversies over the changes in original ORR plans. The opposition parties alleged that the Congress government changed the alignment to suit its interests.

Meanwhile, in another development, the city authorities Friday launched daily drinking water supply in some areas of the city.

It is after a gap of nearly 25 years that the city will be getting a daily water supply. This became possible after the completion of the works to bring Krishna river water to the city.

The daily water supply was discontinued and a system of alternate day supply was introduced in the mid 1980s by the then NTR government in view of the severe water scarcity and insufficient capacity of the reservoirs.

Launching the daily water supply project, the chief minister said that the situation will improve further once the project to bring water from Godavari river is completed. The Godavari water project is estimated to cost of Rs. 23 billion.

Officials said with the city growing by leaps and bounds, water from Krishna river is not sufficient to meet the needs of growing population.

The city and the surrounding areas have a population of over eight million.

Hyderabad: The new international airport in the city is almost ready and the first trial run will take place on Tuesday. The first flight is scheduled to land at 4 pm, at the airport that is being touted as a traveler's paradise.

The Begumpet Airport in Hyderabad which has been open since the days of Nizam's rule will soon be consigned to history. The city is getting a new, modern replacement — the 2500 crore Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.

The airport will be equipped with the following.

A 70 meter high Air Traffic Control tower.

4,260-metre-long runway— India's longest, and capable of handling the world's largest aircraft—the Airbus A380.

4,260-metre taxiway for emergency takeoffs.

A seven-storey passenger terminal.

42 parking bays.

60 check-in counters.

An airport village.

A business hotel with 308 rooms.

And many shopping outlets.

In its initial phase, the airport will be capable of handling over one crore passengers and more than one lakh tonnes of cargo a year. And once the airport is completed, it will handle over four crore passengers and ten lakh tonnes of cargo a year.

The new airport will be commercially operational from March 16, and the first trial run of a passenger aircraft will take place on Tuesday.

TCS launches Synergy Park in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: The slowdown in the U.S. economy has to be watched while concentrating on core competencies. This was revealed by S. Ramadorai, CEO, TCS, during a press conference in connection with the launch of the company’s Synergy Park here on Monday, the second Global Delivery Centre (GDC) and the largest facility of TCS in the city.

S. Mahalingam, CFO, however, maintained that there was no slowdown in decision-making. Mr. Ramadorai said there was definitely a problem in the U.S. in terms of its economy and one had to wait and see while concentrating on core competencies.

Stating that TCS was on a growth mode, the CEO said the company made recruitment offers for about 22,000 people for 2008-09 and had not made any reduction in campus recruitments. He described as “untrue” the reports that 500 employees were asked to leave. Media “bunched it up” with regard to what had happened over a period of 11 months based on their performance. When compared with the employees base of 1.08 lakh the figure was “insignificant”.

Stressing the need to focus on organic growth, he said the acquisition of an asset would not be based on rupee-dollar parity but on the value it can create for the company. He said the salaries in the IT sector would stabilise in future, depending on the capabilities of the employees and how much of that would translate into real growth.

He said TCS was in favour of continuing the Software Technology Parks of India scheme.

Built over an area of 50 acres, the Rs. 750-crore Synergy Park has a potential for 8,000 people. While the first phase, established at a cost of Rs. 250-crore, became operational on Monday, construction of the next phase would begin in April this year. The Park is an approved special economic zone (SEZ) and will serve global TCS customers in various segments with focus on technology areas such as enterprise solutions and IT services.

Mr. Ramadorai described Andhra Pradesh as one of the preferred destinations with Nasscom rating Hyderabad as number one among super nine IT destinations.

Did Pak cricketer Shoaib marry Hyderabad girl?

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabadi connection has come to haunt Pakistan cricket captain Shoaib Malik. Days after he denied that he ever married a city girl, Ayesha, her father has said the wedding indeed took place, and that he has enough evidence to prosecute the cricketer.

Speaking to TOI on Friday, Mohammed Ahmed Siddiqui, Ayesha's father and a retired employee of Saudi Airlines in Jeddah, charged that Malik has abandoned his daughter after marrying her legally and should be punished for this. "There should be a fatwa against him. My demand to him is to accept the marriage and divorce my daughter. She does not want to go back to a cheater like him. And we want our life back," Siddiqui said.

According to the father, Ayesha has been in a state of shock ever since Malik "disowned" the wedding a few days ago. "Malik had insisted the wedding be kept secret. After the wedding, he had visited my Banjara Hills house and stayed with my daughter on more than 10 occasions. The couple had also spent their honeymoon at Taj Krishna. And the feast that I threw for the Pakistani team when they came to Hyderabad was in fact a wedding reception," Siddiqui said.

Ayesha had met Shoaib during a cricket match in Dubai in 2002 where she was working as the vice-principal of an international school. "It was Shoaib who called me up over phone and asked for my daughter's hand. Although I had objections to my daughter marrying a Pakistani boy, I agreed because both of them were keen," Siddiqui said. After two months of courtship, the couple married on June 3, 2002, over phone, with witnesses from both sides as per the Muslim law.

Siddiqui claimed that not only did the marriage take place, but that it was also consummated. "I have the nikahnama (marriage certificate) issued by a Qazi in Sialkot (Pakistan). The 'vidayee' also took place later," he said.

According to sources, Ayesha had met Malik outside India as well. But it's unclear as to why Siddiqui kept both the marriage and the consummation under wraps for six long years. The marriage reportedly broke off because Malik constantly complained about Ayesha's obesity. Malik would often ask her to reduce her weight and even made her undergo a lyposuction, the father said. According to a source, Ayesha had always been obese and that in media interviews after the 'secret' wedding, had stated she would take measures steps to reduce her weight.

The father also blamed some of Malik's cricketer mates for the breakdown of the marriage. "I believe that several of his friends persuaded him to break the wedding," Siddiqui said, but refused to name anyone. Meanwhile, Ayesha is unwilling to give her side of the story and has moved out of the Siddiqui residence and is staying with a 'doctor' friend.

Google innovators strive to make a difference

Aim to make information available anytime, anywhere
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Global R&D
Google News emerged when an employee of Google wanted all the information available on cricket on the Web from publications all over the world.

The Japanese, with their experience in precision planning, came out with Google Transit, a facilitator of logistics.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
V.Rishi Kumar
Hyderabad, Feb. 3 For Internet search provider Google innovations in non-US markets such as India, Thailand, Japan, Poland, and Brazil are making a difference with its much distributed research-driven workforce.

Unlike the US, which has a largely PC-centric Internet interface and about 20 per cent accessing information on mobile phones, a big chunk of Internet users in the Asia Pacific region are mobile devices-driven.

Speaking to Business Line, the Director of Product Management, Mr Dipchand V. Nishar, based at Mountain View (California), explained how Google foresees the Web-driven services space and how innovators handle this challenging task.

Making access easy

He explained there is a fundamental shift in the way people access information. As opposed to a device-centric nature, be it computers or mobile phones, the accent is on cross platform integration, making access to information seamless and device agnostic, he explained.

Researchers in Taipei, Poland, Brazil, Thailand, India (Bangalore) and Japan are in the thick of development work, making it easy for a user to access information from anywhere, anytime.

Local objectives, global offerings

During a visit to Hyderabad, a day after the announcement of Microsoft’s $44.5-billion bid for Yahoo, Mr Nishar, now touring regional research facilities, said innovations that start with local objectives could become global offerings.

Citing the case of how Google News or Google Finance emerged out of India, and how Google Transit, a facilitator of logistics, came out of Japan, Mr Nishar said it is just that the latter could have been possible only in Japan. No one else could have thought of Google Transit but the Japanese with their precision planning, execution and with an eye on punctuality, he said.

What starts as a local innovation, gets validated for global usage. Google News emerged when an employee of Google wanted all the information available on cricket on the Web from publications all over the world.

When asked what set them apart, Mr Nishar said that employees were encouraged to come up with ideas. Several of the innovations which ended up as products, such as Android for mobile phones, Google News and Google Finance, had come through this way. In the 20 per cent “free time” where they are allowed to do what they want, they get innovative. It is this type of flexi-work environment that helps churn out new products.

Digital convergence

Over 40 per cent of world’s population live in this part of the world. Internet penetration is low and the consumption of the digital media is poised for rapid growth. In fact, patterns in some of the social networking sites such as Orkut showed that social network graphs were emerging. Contrary to general perception that only the youth use it, a good number of users were older, he explained.

Wipro hosts Utsaah 2008

Hyderabad, Feb. 3 The employees of Wipro Technology (Hyderabad) and their families showcased their talents at Utsaah 2008 — the annual get together. Hundreds of employees jived, danced and grooved to make the evening memorable.

Utsaah 2008 marks the end of a month-long cultural and sports events within Wipro Hyderabad. Employees from various departments participated in the event.

‘Enriching lives’

A group of volunteers from the employees’ community and the senior management conducted sports events and cultural competitions. The finalists from the various competitions performed at the final event on Saturday and prizes were distributed to the winners.

The Location Head, Wipro Technologies (Hyderabad), Mr Krishnamurthy, in a statement said, “At Wipro, we constantly look at various activities by which we can enrich the lives of our employees, ranging from conducting such get-togethers to working on community initiatives. Fostering a healthy work-life balance, events like Utsaah 2008 help the employees relax, while also nurturing their creativity and teamwork.”

A ‘desi’ edge to expected Microsoft-Yahoo ‘sangam’

Bangalore: When news broke on Friday of Microsoft’s Godfather-like “offer you can’t refuse” to the shareholders of Internet portal leader Yahoo, there was more than average interest in India’s own Silicon City, which is home to large research and development teams for both U.S.-based technology entities.

Microsoft has the larger presence in India — some 5,000-strong — and the software sultan has two key R&D centres. The one in Bangalore is home to Microsoft Research, a hardcore forward-looking research team, led by P. Anandan, which has strong links with academia. It also houses a separate team that creates and supports most of the Indian language initiatives of MSN — Microsoft Network — the browser and search arm.

However, the larger team of engineers is to be found in Hyderabad, where the Microsoft India Development Centre (MIDC) at Gachibowli, is the company’s biggest product development group outside the United States. Headed by Srini Koppulu, one of Microsoft’s longest serving development executives, the MIDC has been key to the company moving many of its flagship Windows and Office applications to the mobile phone.

Yahoo has just over 1,000 India-based engineers — and since 2007, Stanford University scientist Prabhakar Raghavan, a recognised expert on Web search technology, and global head of Yahoo Research, has been guiding the efforts here. Interestingly, India has bucked the trend and made Yahoo the most popular e-mail tool in the country.

The research group has created a number of local search and Indian language tools even while helping to craft the recent “OneSearch” mobile search tool, launched worldwide. “We just had to tap the great talent here,” Yahoo co-founder David Filo told The Hindu on his last visit to Bangalore in 2007.

“This mega bid is of course an acknowledgement of Microsoft’s failure to monetise its online presence, and of the unshakable dominance of Google,” comments Prasanto K. Roy, doyen of Indian technology editors and Editor-in-Chief, CyberMedia Group Publications, in a communication to The Hindu. He adds: “It is ironic that Microsoft of all companies is talking about the evils of monopoly and one-player dominance, when it says that together with Yahoo, it can offer a credible alternative. The bid is a great thing for Yahoo, for even if it does not take the offer; but chances are that it would, for it will not easily get a better offer.”

If the deal goes through, there will inevitably be some overlaps in the India-end of development activity, but based as it is on much-wanted skills, one need not expect that many engineers will be ‘let go.’

This ‘Ram leela’ is unfounded

Rumour mills in tinsel town have been abuzz with all kinds of rumours about Ram Charan Tej and his co-star in Chirutha, the ravishing Neha Sharma.

Putting an end to the incessant rumour mongering is the pretty lady Neha Sharma herself, who's been at the center of all the drama though living far away in Delhi. Speaking from her residence in the Capital she sternly denied all the speculation as loose talk. Clearing the air once and for all Neha says, "There is no truth to any of these rumours.

It was great working with Ram Charan and being my first co-star the experience will always remain special but there is nothing more to it. I don't understand where is all this coming from." Stating that she could not have asked for a better start to her career Neha adds, "Looking back I think it was a perfect launch for me under a great banner and a brilliant director.

I had a great time working with Charan and if an opportunity comes along I would love to work with him again. But all this gossip is something I can do without." That's not all, the actress revealed that she will be soon be coming to Hyderabad to finalise on some movie offers. Looks like, the gossipmongers will be have to shift their attention elsewhere

Investors pouring in big bucks in Hyderabad's realty

Investors are pouring in big bucks into Hyderabad's infrastructure companies. Around USD 550 million of private equity have come in the year 2007 alone reports Viswanath Pilla and Vivin Mathew.

GMR & GVK, which were not exactly household names a mere 5 years ago, are now companies you better know. They’re the ones who won the bids for the modernisation of the New Delhi and Mumbai airports.

Other Hyderabad companies like Indu Projects have taken the cue to grab a piece of the infrastructure pie.

"The ability of raising larger labour pool, ability to stick to project milestones and resources provides a competitive edge for Hyderabad-based companies." I Syam Prasad Reddy, MD & CEO of Indu Projects.

There is an edge that is attracting many private equity firms to Hyderabad. There’s something for everyone and the highest equity infusion was from Blackstone. It put in USD 150 million in Nagarjuna Constructions. Small firms like Soma Enterprise and Aparna Constructions bagged USD 100 million each for malls, townships and roads.

"Everyone wants to be part of booming infrastructure sector, where the real growth is going to take place" adds Maganti Ankineedu, director, soma constructions.

But this is not new to Andhra Pradesh. In the 1960s and 70s, large irrigation and industrial projects like Nagarjuna Sagar and Visakhapatnam Steel Plant created a wave of contractors. Many of whom founded infrastructure companies. a leading example is the Reddy family which owns the Gayatri Projects. Founded by first generation entrepreneur and now incumbent minister T. Subbirami Reddy, it was transformed into an infrastructure company by son Sandeep Reddy.

"Influx of PE funds, corporate governance is helping our companies in the process of transformation. To scale up you need to professionalism, that is where the second generation is making difference." adds TV Sandeep Reddy, MD, Gayatri Constructions.

Also making a difference is the government. It is planning to spend nearly 500 billion on infrastructure projects. That’s certainly more money for Hyderabad that is flush with private equity funds.

Congress Activists Attack Party MP's House In Hyderabad

Sunday 03rd of February 2008
The differences within the ruling Congress party came into the open when party activists attacked the house of their own party MP Hariram Jogaiah here Sunday for his criticism of Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

About 100 party workers barged into the house of Jogaiah at Madhapur neighbourhood and smashed windowpanes and broke the flowerpots.

The MP from Narsapur in coastal Andhra was not at his house at the time of the attack. But he later termed it as a 'murder attempt' on him, and alleged the chief minister was behind it.

He said his wife was alone in the house and the protestors had terrorized her.

Holding party flags in their hands and shouting slogans against the MP, the party activists staged a sit-in outside his house and set his effigy afire.

The protestors demanded that Jogaiah be expelled from the party. 'He should be sent to mental hospital,' shouted one activist.

The police reached the spot and arrested a few Congress workers, who were protesting against Jogaiah's remarks against Rajasekhara Reddy.

Alleging that the chief minister was behind the 'murder attempt' on him, Jogaiah told newsmen that he would complain to party president Sonia Gandhi.

'I will tell the leadership that if this chief minister, who has a criminal background, is not checked, the party will suffer a crushing defeat in the next year's elections,' he said.

'These attacks can't suppress my voice. I will continue to express my views without fear,' he said.

Refusing to resign as MP, he said the people had elected him and he would not betray them by resigning. He, however, said he was ready to face any action by the party leadership. 'If they want to expel me, let them do it.'

Jogaiah had earlier stated that if Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi launches a new party, he would join the same. The MP had also predicted that the film star would become the chief minister and Rajasekhara Reddy would get defeated in the next elections. His remarks had embarrassed the party and the central leadership had also sought explanation from him.

Meanwhile, president of Congress party's Greater Hyderabad unit D. Nagender denied that the chief minister was behind the attack on Jogaiah's house. 'Some party activists vent their anger over his remarks,' he said demanding the MP's immediate expulsion.

ISB ranks 20th on top global B-Schools list

HYDERABAD/ NEW DELHI: The Indian School of Business has found a mention among the top 20 global B-schools on a list released by a global media house. With barely 6 years in operation, the Hyderabad-based institute has been ranked No 20, on the annual MBA 2008 list ahead of its academic alliance partner, Kellogg School which has been ranked No 24. ISB is the first B-school from India, to have figured in the B-school league table.

“This is a landmark event for the ISB,” M Rammohan Rao, dean, ISB told ET. “This ranking is an important milestone in our journey to be an internationally top-ranked research-driven, and independent management institution that grooms leaders for the world.”

While none of the other elite management institutes in India including the IIMs have made it to the top 100 list, two B-schools from China have found a place ahead of ISB in the list at No 11 and 17. The ranking is calculated on the basis of 20 criteria covering specifics like career progress of graduates, diversity of the MBA experience, international mobility of alumni, ideas generation and research, among others. “The ranking would help us to attract more international students and visiting faculty. Besides, it will also have a positive impact on our students’ placement and research partnerships,” Ajit Rangnekar, deputy dean of ISB said.

Currently, 5% of ISB’s 423 students are from abroad and these include NRIs. ISB has about 25 permanent faculties and about 106 visiting faculty. The school is also ramping up its student intake from the present 423 to 560 in 2009.

Chiranjeevi's fans surrender, deny assaulting Rajasekhar

Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi's fans, who went berserk targeting actor Rajasekhar, surrendered before the police on January 29 but claimed that they did not assault the actor.

The fans, residents of Kukatpally in Hyderabad, gave themselves up before Punjagutta police, a day after the incident evoked widespread condemnation across the state including from the megastar himself.

Talking to reporters at the police station, Ganesh, one of the alleged attackers, said they followed Rajasekhar's car from Secunderabad railway station, where the actor disembarked from a train along with his wife and children, to seek an apology from him.

Ganesh claimed that they did not attack Rajasekhar and the actor himself hit a lorry at Punjagutta after driving his car in the wrong route in a state of panic.

The actor came under attack for allegedly insulting Chiranjeevi, who is said to be planning to join politics.

To a query, the alleged attackers said they chased Rajasekhar on their own and that there was none behind their action.

Asked whether they are registered fans of the superstar, they replied in the negative. Their lawyer said a bail petition would be as per the procedures of law.

Rajasekhar and his family members were allegedly attacked by Chiranjeevi's fans at Punjagutta on January 28 following the former's controversial remarks against the mega star.

Meanwhile, Rajasekhar's wife Jeevitha said the attackers should be brought to justice to ensure that such incidents did not recur. She sought a directive from Chiranjeevi to his fans not to indulge in acts of violence in future.

Condemning the incident, Chiranjeevi drove to Rajasekhar's residence and apologised to him in the presence of the media.

Rajasekhar’s car stoned, daughters injured

HYDERABAD: Film actor Rajasekhar escaped an attack allegedly by megastar Chiranjeevi’s fans who stoned his car and broke the windows when he was returning home here early on Monday.

The attack took place when the actor was returning from a trip to Bhimavaram after disembarking from a train at Secunderabad. Dr. Rajasekhar who was driving a car was accompanied by wife Jeevitha and daughters Shivani and Shivanthika. The girls sustained injuries.

The attack was sparked off by Dr. Rajasekhar’s comments to a TV channel that he would not like to join the megastar’s proposed political party because the latter was ‘inexperienced’. Earlier, a group of fans also tried to enter the train compartment but was pushed away by security personnel of Minor Irrigation Minister Maganti Venkateswara Rao and MP V. Balashowrie, who were travelling in the same train.

Within hours of the attack, Chiranjeevi reached the actor’s residence in Jubilee Hills and waited for over an hour as Dr. Rajasekhar was at a live, phone-in programme organised by another TV channel in this connection. As soon as the actor returned home, the two actors were closeted for about half-an-hour, after which the two, with Ms. Jeevitha in tow, spoke to presspersons.

Message to fans

Chiranjeevi apologised to Dr. Rajasekhar for the attack. “In a democracy everybody has a right to speak. What Dr. Rajasekhar said was true as I am inexperienced in politics. You should not resort to such attacks especially when you say I am a disciplined person,” he said in a message to his fans. Dr. Rajasekhar said it was not his intent to make the megastar come to his house. He only wanted a message to be sent to Chiranjeevi’s fans that such violent reaction was not proper. He said he would seek police protection for his family. A steady stream of political leaders and bigwigs of the film industry called on Dr. Rajasekhar. They included Marketing Minister Botsa Satyanarayana, Greater Hyderabad Congress president Danam Nagender and MLC P. Sudhakar Reddy. Actor MP M. Mohan Babu and producer Bellamkonda Suresh also met Dr. Rajasekhar.

6 Ways to reduce your I-T burden

6 Ways to reduce your I-T burden

Chances are that if you are one of the salaried millions, you are at this point in time running around trying to put some of your money in tax shelters so that the government doesn't take all your savings away.

Some prefer to use the services of a chartered accountant to save as much tax as they can. Most people think an investment of Rs 1 lakh, under section 80C of the I-T Act, is the maximum possible.

However, with individual salaries zooming north and sources of income multiplying like never before, a bit more effort on the part of a taxpayer can reduce the tax burden considerably.

Many of you may have already submitted your tax declaration form-the declaration given to an employer stating all your tax-saving investments for that financial year. You still have time to make your investments by March end and claim your refund later while filing the tax return.

Here are six ways to be tax wise in 2008.

BUY A HOUSE

The best way to save on income tax is to buy a house on a loan. Not only do you get a tax deduction on the interest on the loan but part of the principal is also deductible. Real estate also appreciates in value, so buying a home could be a win-win situation.

"Even if you have the money to buy a house, it is worthwhile to buy a house on loan because you can put your money in a mutual fund and enjoy a tax-free income," says Subhash Lakhotia, a New Delhi-based tax consultant. "In addition, you would earn by capital appreciation of your property."

Benefits: Under section 24 of the I-T Act, a taxpayer is eligible for an annual deduction of Rs1.50 lakh on the interest component of the loan, if the accommodation is for the person who has availed of the loan.

In addition, section 80C covers deductions related to the repayment of the principal amount of the home loan, along with other tax-saving instruments such as the Public Provident Fund (PPF), National Saving Certificates (NSCs), equity-linked mutual funds, tax-saving bonds or unit-linked insurance plans (Ulips)-up to an overall limit of Rs1 lakh. In case such property is given on rent, the interest from the income will be tax-free.

So buying a house can save up to Rs75,000 in taxes, if you have not made any other investments under section 80C.

INVEST INCOME FROM LONG-TERM CAPITAL GAINS

Long-term capital gains from the sale of property can be tax-free if reinvested in any other homestead property or permissible securities such as bonds issued by National Highways Authority of India, Rural Electrification Corp. Ltd or other such organizations.

The period of holding of the asset determines whether the gain is short term or longterm. Short-term capital gains arise on transfer of assets such as shares, mutual funds or other listed securities, which are held by the assessee for a period not exceeding 12 months (36 months for other assets). Long-term capital gains ariseif the assessee holds assets such as shares, mutual funds or other listed securities for a period exceeding 12 months (36 months in the case of other assets).

In the case of other assets, including a residential house and landed properties, long-term capital gain is taxed at 20% in addition to surcharge and education cess as applicable, while short-term capital gain attracts the normal tax rates.

Long-term capital gain arising out of transfer of shares, securities and mutual funds is exempt from income tax, provided securities transaction tax has been paid on such transfers. But where such gain is short-term, it would attract tax of 10% in addition to surcharge and education cess.

Benefits: To avoid paying tax on long-term capital gains, section 54 says that one has to buy a residential property within one year before the sale, or within two years after the sale. If a new house is to be constructed, section 54 grants three years' time from the sale of the property for long-term capital gain to be exempted from tax, subject to fulfillment of certain conditions, says K.H. Viswanathan, executive director of Astute Consulting and Business Services Pvt. Ltd, a Mumbai-based accounting and consulting firm.

ALWAYS COMPARE NET YIELD AFTER TAX

Before signing up for any investment plan, be sure to first calculate the net yield after tax. Sometimes, high interest rates can be a misleading indicator because the income generated at the end of the tenure might not be tax free.

Benefits: Consider this. While income generated form bank deposits (9%) is taxable for investors, it is tax-free for Public Provident Fund investors (8%). Similarly, income from National Savings Certificates is chargeable to tax that can reduce your net yield considerably.

PLAN YOUR SALARY AND PERQUISITES

Many organizations give employees the option to plan staff salary and perquisites. With a little tweaking, the salary structure can reduce the tax burden and enhance take-home pay.

Benefits: Inclusion of tax-free allowances can reduce your tax bill. Some of the partly or fully tax-free allowances include house rent allowance (in case rent is paid), conveyance allowance, which is exempt up to Rs800 per month, leave travel allowance, which is exempted once in two years, medical reimbursement, which is exempt up to Rs15,000 per year. But while structuring your salary, be careful to include only those allowances which are in accordance with your job profile.

EXPLORE OTHER TAX ENTITIES

Experts say you can reduce tax substantially if other members of your family file an I-T return too, because this helps in the segregation of your income.

Benefits: If you already own a house in which you live, you can buy a second house in the names of those family members who do not own homestead property. This is a useful option considering the amount of deduction a home loan can get. Investing in commercial property, however, has no tax advantages.

GIVE GIFTS

Gifts to relatives (spouses, brothers or sisters, brothers or sisters of a spouse, brothers or sisters of either of the parents, or direct blood relatives) are tax exempt.

Benefits: In case of gifted assets, the income earned from such gifted assets shall not be taxable in the hands of the donor except in the case of a gift given to a spouse or son's wife.

Kumble bags 600th wicket as Australia collapse

Anil Kumble became the third bowler to capture 600 test wickets as India snatched an unexpected 118-run lead over Australia, bowling them out for 212 on the second day of the third test on Thursday.

The Indian skipper picked up two wickets to join Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne as the only bowlers to take 600 test victims on a day when Australia's batting lineup wilted on a baking hot day at the WACA.

Leftarm paceman Rudra Pratap Singh collected four wickets after a superb display of fast bowling while Irfan Pathan and teenage paceman Ishant Sharma grabbed two apiece.

Australia, who won the first two matches in the series to equal their own world record of 16 consecutive test wins, looked to have gained the upper hand when they quickly polished off the Indian innings for 330 in the morning session.

Mitchell Johnson and Stuart Clark combined to knock off the last four Indian wickets for just two runs in 17 deliveries, but Australia's own batting collapsed as the temperature climbed to 41 degrees Celcius.

The Australians lost their first three wickets before the total had passed 13, then their last five for 47. Only Andrew Symonds (66) and Adam Gilchrist (55) saved them from complete disaster.

Indian wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni had five catches, including four off RP Singh, and had a hand in another, deflecting a catch off Symonds to Rahul Dravid at slip that gave Kumble his 600th wicket.

Pathan, playing his first match of the series after replacing Harbhajan Singh, triggered the Australian collapse when he dismissed openers Chris Rogers and Phil Jaques in the same over before lunch, then Sharma took the vital wickets of Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke in the middle session.

DRAMATIC EVENTS

RP Singh chipped in to remove dangerman Mike Hussey for a duck before Symonds and Gilchrist steadied the innings with a 102-run sixth wicket partnership off 84 balls before the tail crumbled.

The dramatic events of the day seemed unlikely when India made a bright but eventful start after resuming on 297-6, adding 33 without loss in the first hour.

But the match suddenly burst to life when Clark trapped Dhoni lbw for 19 with a ball that straightened up and hit above the knee roll and looked to be sailing over the bails.

Johnson dismissed Pathan for 28 when he struck him on the pads with a full toss in the next over, then Clark removed Kumble for one off the next ball, caught at point by debutant Rogers.

Johnson finished off the innings by dismissing RP Singh for a duck, caught in the gully by Hussey, leaving Sharma stranded without making a run.

Rogers, making his debut after Matthew Hayden succumbed to a hamstring problem, was trapped lbw by Pathan for four even though the ball looked to be drifting past leg stump.

Fellow opener Jaques departed two balls later, caught at second slip by Vangipurappu Laxman for eight.

Hussey registered his first duck in test cricket when he edged RP Singh behind as the Indian seamers put Australia's batsmen under pressure after lunch, extracting plenty of movement both in the air and off the pitch.

Microsoft developing software to monitor staff's productivity and well-being

Sydney, January 18 (ANI): Microsoft is developing software that may help employers to monitor the productivity, competence and physical well-being of employees while sitting at a distance.

The software will even reveal when an employee is stressed or frustrated by reading his/her heartbeat and facial expressions.

A patent application filed by the company reveals that the whole process will be based on a computer system that links workers to their computers through wireless sensors that measures their metabolism.

The system will be able to measure workers' heart rate, body temperature, brain signals, movement, facial expression and blood pressure.

However, civil liberties groups and privacy lawyers are criticising this project, voicing concerns that it may lead to employees' dismissal on the basis of a computers assessment of their physiological state.

"Imposing this level of intrusion on employees could only be justified in exceptional circumstances," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Britain's Information Commissioners Office as telling The Times.

Microsoft, which does not generally comment on the progress of its projects, has said in a statement that the use of hear beat data is only an example of the type of monitoring that their software may facilitate.

"This particular patent application, in general, describes an innovation aimed at improving activity-monitoring systems and uses the monitoring of user heart rate as an example of the kind of physical state that could be monitored to detect when users need assistance with their activities, and to offer assistance by putting them in touch with other users who may be able to help," said Horacio Gutierrez, Microsoft's vice president of intellectual property and licensing.

"It is important to keep in mind that with most organisations in the business of innovation, some of our patent applications reflect inventions that are currently present in our products, and other applications represent innovations being developed for potential future use," Gutierrez added.

The US Patent Office had confirmed that the application was published last month, 18 months after being filed. Patent lawyers say that it could be granted within a year. (ANI)

TRS’ ultimatum on Telangana issue

HYDERABAD: Stepping up the pressure on the statehood demand, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) on Wednesday set March 6 deadline for the UPA government to begin the process and threatened mass resignations of its representatives if the Centre failed to respond.
"All our MPs, MLAs and MLCs will submit their resignations on March 6 if the government fails

to begin the process for carving out Telangana state. This is the last chance for Congress to prove its sincerity," TRS founder- president and MP K Chandrasekhar Rao said here.
The TRS, which had pulled out of the UPA in September 2006 protesting delay in creation of the separate state, has four MPs, 16 MLAs and 3 MLCs.
"After resignations, we will take the issue to the people and organize a 'bus yatra' across the region to expose the betrayal by the Congress," Rao, who represents Karimnagar Lok Sabha constituency, said.
Accusing the Congress of dilly-dallying over the Telangana issue despite making an 'unambiguous promise' before the 2004 elections, he said, "We want the Prime Minister to clearly state the official position and start the process for formation of Telangana. Enough is enough."
The TRS move comes in the backdrop of increasing pressure from Telangana protagonists within the ruling Congress on creation of a new state, an issue that is expected to be a major factor in the next elections, about 15 months away.
